An electrical transformer explosion and fire Wednesday at an assisted living facility near Quebec Street and Smith Way in Denver displaced 87 residents.

The fire department said eight people were transported to hospital.

Damage to the building was extensive and it was expected to be closed for an extended period.

"During construction work at the facility, a power line was accidentally struck, which contributed to an explosion and subsequent transformer fire," the fire department said.

Residents were placed in other facilities.
